When parents separate or divorce, the term "custody" often serves as shorthand
for "who gets the children" during and after the divorce. In California,
custody is split into two types: physical custody and legal custody. Physical
custody refers to the responsibility of taking care of the children, while
legal custody involves making decisions that affect their interests (such as
medical, educational and religious decisions). Both types of custody can be
shared, or exclusive to one parent.
If you and your spouse are unable to agree on arrangements for physical and legal custody, Mr. Gurley will work with you to understand what arrangement you feel is in the best interests of your children. Custody fights can be protracted and bitter; Mr. Gurley will help you minimize disruption to your children while endeavoring to reach a speedy and equitable settlement.
